张天翼　1947年生，毕业于天津工艺美院。
天津市艺术研究所研究员。
中国美术家协会会员，著名中国京剧史画家中国画画家。
是最早开展戏曲与美术交叉学科研究的学者。
曾经在天津市京剧团做舞台美术工作多年在天津戏剧博物馆参加建馆工作和做戏剧文物陈列设计工作多年。
1997年调入天津市艺术研究所从事美术学研究。
作为艺术科研学者，创立了一门新的、立体的人文学科——“扮装人物画创研”学科。几十年来做逐步深入地研究。其成果包括：
学科理论：
（一），1994底接受专家建议与嘱托开始从事戏曲与美术交叉学科研究，学术与艺术走上一条“学科化”研创之路。首开对人类扮装文化学的研究和戏曲人物画学科的研究。首次提出造型艺术新品种、新造型方式-——“扮装艺术”理论。十几年间写的多篇论文与专著《扮装艺术论》首次对人类自远古至当代的极其丰富多彩的扮装现象、及由此形成的人类的“扮装文化”进行系统阐述，规范出人文学科的一片新领域；首次提出造型艺术新类别、新造型方式-——“扮装艺术”理论，在国内已经产生广泛的影响。网上搜索“扮装”、“扮装文化”、“扮装艺术”字样，可以得到很多相关信息。
（二），提出多项人物造型美学理论。如《转相造型美学》、《借形造型思维》、《虚拟造型思维》、《安泰美学》等，都由自己的绘画作品体现出来。
（三），京剧艺术本体发展的高峰阶段断代史“鼎盛五十年”界定理论，并于2001年成功完成巨幅京剧艺术史画《鼎盛三十六家图卷》的创作。作为中国京剧发展史上的第一幅正式的“京剧史画”，各有关领导和专家对其重要的文化意义、文献价值和艺术价值给以充分肯定与高度评价。在国内已经产生广泛的影响。在网上搜索《鼎盛三十六家图卷》，可以得到很多有关信息。
（四），2002年杨柳青出版社出版专著《鼎盛三十六家图卷立体思维》（获得天津市社科成果奖），2005年天津美术出版社出版学术性画册《鼎盛三十六家图卷》。此外，学术著作还有专著《扮装艺术论》、论文集《天翼文集》与美术学专著《画河漂流》等。
学科绘画：
《鼎盛三十六家图卷》是代表作品。在天津市公开展出，并应邀在全国政协、澳门、珠海等地公开展出。在国内国外产生了很大的影响。兼擅中西绘画，尤其擅长戏曲速写和大写意戏曲人物画。1978年始，由油画、水粉画转工戏曲人物画。几十年来，理论研究与艺术创作密切结合，以戏曲人物为造型对象，探索“扮装人物”绘画的独特造型语言。戏曲速写和大写意戏曲人物画自成一格。几十年来，走着一条“文化画”的独特道路，《觉醒》绘画系列是重要代表作，是以京剧人物为造型参照表现作者对改革开放三十年中国社会“人的自觉”发展历程各个阶段的感悟的写意人物画系列。建构“虚拟悟象·形外线构成”扮装人物画形式系统是学科绘画主要科研项目。网上搜索“画家张天翼”可以看到很多有关信息。
天津人民美术出版社1995年出版《张天翼京剧人物画选集》。在天津、北京等地多次举办个人展览。入选各种类型美术展览，曾获得纪念文艺座谈会讲话60周年美展优秀奖，很多作品为国内外重要机构收藏。
文化活动与对外交流
1990年始，依国家大力弘扬民族文化、振兴京剧艺术的形势的需要，国内最早以绘画作品多次积极配合国家重要戏曲演出活动，如配合为纪念徽班进京200周年，策划并主持举办（国内首次）天津戏曲人物画联展；配合“第二届全国少儿京剧大赛”举办个人画览、1994年12月作为国家举办的“梅兰芳周信芳诞辰一百周年纪念”活动之一项，在北京举办“张天翼京剧人物画展”。中国艺术研究院美术研究所为画展举办专家研讨会，对此画展给以高度评价；1995年为“首届中国京剧艺术节”设计纪念封，得到国内广泛关注；1996年为配合天津举办的“京剧走近大学生”活动举办个人绘画巡展等等。造成广泛的社会影响。
其京剧人物画作品曾多次被作为国家和天津市对外文化交流的重要戏曲演出活动的纪念礼品，赠给各国政府及相关重要机构收藏，为民族文化的国际交流做出贡献。依其对京剧艺术事业的发展的贡献、首次对戏曲人物美术的创作、展出、出版、交流作为戏曲文化和美术文化的重要组成部分起到了整合作用，对戏曲人物美术的发展起到促进作用（受到首届中国京剧艺术节组委会颁证表彰）。
