谷文达,生于上海,1981年毕业于中国美术学院国画系研究生班,后留校任教,1987年移居美国纽约,现为职业画家,曾在世界各地的博物馆、画廊举办展览。谷文达是现今活跃的著名华人艺术家。1998年底,谷文达“蜕变与突破:华人新艺术”大展在纽约开幕,其作品《天坛》登上1999年3月《美国艺术》(ArtinAmerica)的封面,成为华人艺术家的第一人。2002年3月号的《东方》杂(Orientations)更以画家肖像作封面,并在内页注明此乃创举,一反该杂向来只关注亚洲传统艺术的风格。欧雷利(MichaelKampenORiley)撰着的《西方以外的艺术》“后现代和后殖民时代的国际主义”一章中,以谷文达为代表,阐述在1990年之后,非西方艺术家如何自由地汲古创新,开拓出超越的国际观和多元化的视觉空间。
