北京人。擅长版画、美术评论。11965年毕业于中央美术学院版画系，1970年毕业于吉林大学中文系，1978年考入中国社会科学院研究生院文学系。1981年到中宣部文艺学工作，2000年以后担任人民文学出版社副总编辑。曾在解放军海军某部工作，历任人民音乐出版社编辑，人民美术出版社编辑、总编助理、总编辑兼任中国美术出版总社副董事长。享受政府特殊津贴。作品有《在阳光下成长》、《金珠玛米教我学习》等，编著有《中国分类美术全集》(副总编)，《中国现代美术全集》(编委会主任)，《中国古代木刻画选集》、《故宫明清扇面书画集》等，曾在国际图书展中获银奖和铜奖。出版有《刘玉山画集》、《刘玉山速写集》、《刘玉山画盘作品选》等。
